Press Release Summary = Unique Los Angeles sleep apnea testing facility, housed in a well-appointed, landmark hotel, provides children with a minimally evasive testing process with parents encouraged to stay overnight in the room during the analysis.
Press Release Body = (August 23, 2006 - Studio City, CA) In what is thought to be the first study linking neural changes in the brains of children with untreated sleep apnea, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine researchers have concluded that "youngsters afflicted with the disorder suffer damage in two brain structures tied to learning ability." It was determined that, "Children with OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) had significantly lower scores than matched controls on full scale IQ tests and significantly lower performance on measures of executive function, including verbal working memory (sentence span) and word fluency.\" The study was published in the August 22 journal Public Library Science of Medicine.
Recognizing the extreme dangers of sleep apnea and the special conditions that exist when treating children, David Pisarra, President of Gateway SleepLabs, successfully utilizes a unique concept aimed at providing young patients with a comfortable, stress-free environment in which to undergo thorough evaluations.
Trained technicians specializing in sleep disorders perform the latest testing procedures in well-appointed hotel rooms located at the landmark and recently renovated Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City. Children are provided a minimally evasive testing process and their parents are encouraged to stay in the room during the overnight analysis. Doctors have also found the testing results to be more conclusive as deeper REM sleep is achieved due to the comfortable setting.
"Our facility is uniquely qualified to address the safety, security and comfort concerns of children and parents, "says Pisarra. "When the lab was originally conceived, we chose the Sportsmen's Lodge not just for the comfort of our adult patients but because we wanted to treat children in the most stress-free environment possible."
As reported by the National Institute of Health, more than eighteen million Americans suffer from sleep apnea, a condition in which breathing stops from between 10 seconds and 2 minutes during sleep. It is a dangerous and progressive disorder that can cause high blood pressure, headaches, impotency, and weight gain as well as potentially fatal conditions.
In further explaining his commitment to servicing children who may be at risk for sleep apnea, Pisarra says, "By allowing parents to spend the night in the same room, the long history of the Lodge as a family-friendly location and access to the pool, room service and video games, it has been the perfect choice in creating that \'at home\' feeling for nervous patients and their parents.\"
